As Canagarajah says “We understand more languages than we can speak” (Canagarajah 5). This means that we can use our own language as a reference to understand other languages, especially if they are like French and Spanish where they are both romance languages. Unfortunately what I found is that English is not the easiest language to compare to others because of the structure, and many of our words are much different. There are only simple words that I can truly make a connection to from French to English, and sometimes it is very misleading. This is where I disagree with Canagarajah’s belief that being brought up with some form of translingualism, such as codemeshing, will increase an individual’s confidence. I experienced codemeshing growing up and I believe it actually decreased my confidence as a speaker. This is because I never truly made full sentences, therefore when I needed to I could not do it. Also while in Africa they used Wolof and French, while I codemeshed with English and French, which is very different. All these factors show that transligualism is not always helpful to everyone when speaking.
